Holding space: a gentle primer

We use the phrase often, but rarely define it. Here's what it means to hold space — for others, and for yourself.

To hold space is to be fully present with someone without trying to fix, advise, or steer. It sounds passive. In practice it's one of the most active, attentive things you can do.

What it asks of us

Sometimes the kindest thing isn't an answer. It's a witness.
